A popular activity in the Wellbeing unit is our art group, which meet every Friday afternoon. The art group work with a variety of mediums, including paint, pencils, chalk, fabric and more. Sessions can be member-led skillshares, where members demonstrate techniques, and others can learn from this and have a go themselves. This provides an opportunity for peer learning, and to teach and build confidence. The art group also participate fully in the clubhouse, creating pieces of work that are needed for the running of Flourish. For example, our Community Fridge sign, a scarecrow for our allotment, contributions to the Flourish Times, and much more. Art group is a welcome opportunity for self expression and creativity.
“I have done about 6 skillshares now –
- Showing how to draw star bursts in colour on black paper
- Drawing roses in colour in different styles with thorns with a gothic look
- Pencil shading in black and white, cross hatching lines, soft and dark shading.” [FH member who independently leads sessions]
“We made pride hearts one Friday afternoon. As surprising as it may seem, I was also involved, and made 3 hearts. These were: transgender, nonbinary and genderfluid.” [FH member who doesn’t usually do art group]
“I haven’t had the confidence to do creative things as I can’t draw or paint. The art group accepted me and didn’t judge me.
One of my favourite sessions was doing mixed media. I have really enjoyed coming to the art sessions.
I now feel as if my work is not as bad as what it used to be.” [FH member]
“The art group is great at bringing members to Flourish who do not normally come. Many of us enjoy the group and the creativity Eleanor inspires, along with the members. I think the members would not do art any other time during the week.” [another FH member]
